Varney of Hammond, who enlisted in the Civil Guard during her junior year at Gavit High School,  received her English inchmeal during Purdue Calumet Commencement Exercises Sunday (5/16) at the Radisson Evening star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.

Initially, she said she was intrigued about joining the Popular Guard because it would pay her college tuition. But once she received more information from a recruiter, she knew she wanted to assistant her country and expand her world view.

“It was a life-changing knowledge for me,” Varney said. “I learned the meaning of comradery and the account of giving back to society.”

Varney said that she would be a different person if she hadn’t enlisted in the mending.

“Before, I wasn’t as motivated to succeed,” she said. “I was faltering to get involved in school activities and I was kind of shy.”

At Purdue Calumet, Varney has been enrolled in Purdue Calumet’s Honors Program and has served as a Swotter Ambassador for the Admissions Office. She also has been an assistant coordinator for the Purdue Calumet-based Northwest Indiana Scribble literary works Project, an English Language Program mentor, a career peer in the Pursuit Services Office, and a supplemental instruction leader for the Dept. of English & Cool-headedness.
