Along with Mary there's Hester (Maggie Smith), a crusty delegate's widow; Arabella (Judi Dench), a cheerful bohemian; lesbian archaeologist Georgie (Lily Tomlin); and Elsa (Cher), a florid American who quietly finances Luca's schooling. Il Scorpioni witness the rise of fascism and the dangers of Maquis, weathering dictatorial custody and (in Elsa's at all events) falling prey to heartbreaking betrayal. But Tea with Mussolini carries scarcely dramatic weight; you have to forgive its unfocused formation to appreciate its merits.
